Mystery cancers are cropping up in children in aftermath of Fukushima

Months after the disaster, Fukushima Prefecture set about examining the thyroids of hundreds of thousands of children and teens for signs of radiation-related cancers. The screening effort was unprecedented, and no one knew what to expect. So when the first round of exams started turning up thyroid abnormalities in nearly half of the kids, of whom more than 100 were later diagnosed with thyroid cancer, a firestorm erupted.

Japan now has full blown domestic and international crises on their hands.

Let’s deal with the domestic first.  This could not come at a worst time and yes that sounds like a cliché; Japan has a debt ridden slow growth economy with a significantly below replacement fertility rate declining population.

The clean up costs (measured in U.S. dollars) will be in the tens of billions and last one if not two DECADES!  The majority of this money will have to be borrowed further dragging their already ailing economy.  As cancer rates soar along with birth defects Japanese women will become even more prone to avoid motherhood.  This will include Japanese women who do desire pregnancy who will be infertile or her husband.

The cat is now out of the bag! Japan can no longer hide the extent of this staggering environmental and medical catastrophe; the law suits domestically and internationally will be staggering.  I wouldn’t be surprised Japan in a few years from now a superfund of around 500 billion U.S. dollars for settlements primarily for Japanese, Canadian, U.S. and Mexican citizens harmed by radiation.  No doubt President Trump is in the driver seat for redo for trade with Japan by providing some form of mitigation – NOT elimination – of international lawsuits.
