Panama opens new chapter with China

PANAMA established diplomatic ties with China yesterday, with the government of the Republic of Panama recognizing there is but one China in the world and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. 

In Panama, President Juan Carlos Varela announced the change, which entails breaking off formal relations with Taiwan, saying in a televised address that it represents the “correct path for our country.” 

The communique says Panama and China are recognizing each other and establishing ambassadorial-level relations the same day. 

“The government of the Republic of Panama recognizes that there is but one China in the world, that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory,” the communique reads.

 It says Panama severs diplomatic relations with Taiwan “as of this day” and undertakes not to have any more official relations or official exchanges with Taiwan.

 DYI:  Two separate but intertwined issues. 

1.)     China on a diplomatic basis is moving aggressively against Taiwan in an effort to isolate this island country.  China has from day one, when Chiang Kai-shek fled to Formosa (Taiwan) after losing out to Mao Zedong during their civil war, is seen as property of China – A One China Policy.  China has stated very emphatically that if Taiwan espouses independence whether in words or deeds they will attack militarily seizing the island.  In foreign policy China’s word is gold and they will attack for losing face is completely unacceptable.  As the older Taiwanese retire or die the younger Taiwanese will hold the mantel of power and on a group basis very pro independence.  War is coming for this island.  The timing will be set by China.

2.)     Why in the world did President Jimmy Carter sell off the Panama Canal to Panama?  The United State built the canal and paid for it lifting millions of Panamanians out of poverty and over time into a 1^st world lifestyle.  The Chinese now have stronger diplomatic ties with Panama and are investing billions into the Atlantic side port facility    Margarita Isle (Colon container facility) 1,200 hectares almost 3,000 acres.  China is garnering diplomatic relations in the United States backyard a huge win for the Peoples Republic.
